Expo 2015, distribution of the “bread of hope” starts

From the 8th May at 12.00 in the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano pavilion

The symbology behind bread is immense, and the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano has brought within itself over the centuries this sensibility and communication, offering today a new chance to reflect about the topic of food and peace. In fact, through the tradition of distributing the “bread of St. Lucy”, protector of stone cutters, to those who worked for the Duomo, in particular during the first years of construction of the Cathedral – at the end of the XIV Century – the Veneranda Fabbrica has been expressing over the centuries a great value of civil life in any time: share to multiply. Also in the Book of Exodus (chap. 16) is recalled that manna was harvested every day by the sons of Israel, except Saturdays. On evening morning, though, it was harvested in double portion, to be used as bread for the next day.

Retracing this high tradition born in the village of the Great Duomo Yard, under the sign of the positive energy of this action, every Friday, starting 8th May 2015 at 12.00 and through all the World Fair semester, in its pavilion in Expo housing the copy of the Madonnina, the Veneranda Fabbrica will distribute for free 1000 breads, food of hope for tomorrow, sign of solidarity, refreshment and nourishment for the body. Starting from the next Friday, the distribution of the bread of hope will also take place outside the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata in Camposanto (Piazza del Duomo, 18), in the city centre.

«We would like that distributing bread on Friday evening would assume this deep symbolic value: eat today the bread which opens us the hope for tomorrow, the bread that is sign of the upcoming Reign of God. Maybe we say the same every time we declare the Lord’s Prayer, when we pray: «Give us this day our bread for tomorrow». In fact, again in the Jesus prayer, we still today pray God so that «Your Kingdom come», a Kingdom of peace and justice, sharing and fraternity» - this is the wish expressed by Mons. Gianantonio Borgonovo, Archpriest of the Duomo di Milano and President of the Veneranda Fabbrica. The initiative of the bread of hope is realised thanks to the sensibility proved by the historic company Maria Marinoni telling this sign of peace, available from the very beginning to support the project of the Veneranda Fabbrica, sharing the same goals. Always careful about customers’ needs and about the evolution of daily life, Marinoni has caught today the challenge of Expo 2015.

The Chiosco Gourmet Maria Marinoni is located inside Expo (N 24) with a laboratory provided with an oven, where it is always possible to taste crunchy and fresh bread with a wide range of bakery products, sweet and savory from Italian tradition.
