After experimenting new access solutions in the Cathedral, planned the last month of May, the Veneranda Fabbrica believes necessary to make some adjustments to the service, in order to offer, both to all the worshippers and the visitors, a rational and regulated way of access to the Duomo, and make all the different areas, each reserved to a specific category of visitor, compatible.
Also thanks to the suggestions and requests made by card. Angelo Scola, Archbishop of Milan, and to the debate that followed, the following modifications will be applied starting Thursday 11th June 2015 included.
1.) Worshippers Area: reserved places
The distinction between worshippers (who enters the Cathedral only to pray) and tourists (who enters the Cathedral only to visit it) allows worshippers not to meet the queues at the tourists’ entrance. To worshippers are reserved: the farthest north nave (with the tomb of card. Martini), the area of the central nave closest to the Main Altar, the Madonna dell’Albero transept, the Cappella Feriale and the access to the Masses’ Sacristies.
In this areas are granted to worshippers:
a) in Cappella Feriale: celebrations and prayer;
b) in the Madonna dell’Albero transept: the possibility to approach the Sacrament of Penance;
c) in the farthest north Nave: access to the candles at the Madonna dell’aiuto and at the Crucifix altar with the tomb of Card. Martini;
d) at the entrance, just after entering the portal: activation of a spiritual counseling point, also accessible to tourists.
2.) Worshippers Area: new access procedure
From 8.00 to 19.00 everyday, the access to the Duomo reserved to worshippers will be through the farthest north portal (Piazza del Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II side).
From 7.00 to 8.00 everyday, worshippers will be able to enter through the Cathedral side doors (Piazza del Duomo, Arcivescovado side).
3.) Pass for the worshippers who daily access the Duomo
A pass is available for the worshippers who daily access the Cathedral: the pass grants access also in the area housing the urns of the Blessed Archbishops, card. Andrea Ferrari, card. Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster and the relic of Blessed card. Giovanni Battista Montini (Paolo VI), which will be placed, in the next weeks, on St. Agatha’s Altar. The pass can be requested free at the staff in the Masses Sacristy of the Duomo.
The continuous increase of visitors, as a result of the “Expo effect”, suggests a more thorough control at the entrance, in order to make more effective the monitoring of the number of people inside the Cathedral.
Therefore, starting 11th June, the access timetable for tourists will be as the following:
a) Monday – Friday: from 8.00 to 22.00. Last ticket at 21.00. Last admission at 21.10
b) Saturday and Celebrations’ eves. Daytime opening: from 8.00 to 17.30. Last ticket at 17.00. Last admission at 17.15.
Evening opening on Saturday: from 18.30 to 22.00. Last ticket at 21.00. Last admission at 21.10.
c) Sunday and Celebrations. Daytime opening: from 13.30 to 17.00. Last ticket at 17.00. Last admission 17.15. Evening opening on Sunday and Celebrations: from 18.30 to 22.00. Last ticket at 21.00. Last admission at 21.10.
5.) Visitors Ticket and admissions
To access the Duomo tourists must show the € 2,00 ticket, which also grants the following admissions:
a) at the Grande Museo del Duomo (Palazzo Reale – Piazza del Duomo, 12);
b) at the Food Corner in Sala delle Colonne (Piazza del Duomo, 14/A);
c) (starting from the next weeks) at the exhibitions on display in San Gottardo in Corte Church (via Francesco Pecorari, 2) and in Sala Gian Galeazzo Visconti in the same Museum.
6.) The ticket will be suspended on Saturday/eves and Sunday/celebrations according to the following
In order to grant the city a full fruition of the Duomo in its primary function as Cathedral of the Archbishop of Milan and Mother Church of all the Ambrosian Rite Churches, admission tickets are suspended on Saturday/eves (from 17.00 to 18.30) and Sunday/celebration (from 8.00 to 13.30 and from 17.00 to 18.30).
7.) Monthly monitoring of the services
Monitoring of all the provided services will be conducted on a monthly base, granting a continuous dialogue between the Archbishop, the Veneranda Fabbrica, worshippers, the city and the millions of tourists visiting Milan on the occasion of the Expo2015 Semester.
