It appeared in the sky of Milan in December 1774 .
Without warning, like a surprise, the citizens of Milan remained in awe of the image that appeared above the horizon, atop the Main Spire of the Cathedral. A figure they would never forget.
After overcoming technical obstacles and difficulties and casting away doubt with their creative energy, the Veneranda Fabbrica wanted the statue of the Madonnina to be placed on the highest point atop the Duomo.
With a height of 4.16 meters (13.6 ft), the 33 copper sheets and stainless steel framework together weigh 964,000 kilograms (564,800 Kg of which is the stainless steel structure). Surrounded by a cloud of four cherubs, it’s the greatest offering the Veneranda Fabbrica has made to Milan over the centuries. The Madonnina’s protection is offered to whoever finds joy in looking at her, anyone who gazes at her and takes a moment for reflection. Those who come to Milan remain astonished at her light; those who leave carry her with them forever.
“An intense desire to get closer to Madonnina has always existed. This is why in 2015 the Veneranda Fabbrica commissioned the Fonderia Nolana Del Giudice foundry to create a faithful copy of Madonnina statue in 1:1 scale. In this way, all people of faith and all visitors can approach and contemplate this symbol of protection. Drawing near the Madonnina it seems natural to sing the ancient antiphon from the third century, which in the Ambrosian version begins: Sub tuam misericordiam confugimus Dei Genetrix (Under your mercy we take refuge, Mother of God).
The copy of the Madonnina is now located inside the Duomo, its natural home. Exactly as happened in 1774, the Veneranda Fabbrica wanted to bring the statue by night: suddenly it appeared inside the Duomo, visible to all who enter the cathedral at this time” - words of Mons. Gianantonio Borgonovo, President of the Veneranda Fabbrica of the Duomo of Milan.
Here, light filters through the large stained glass windows, releasing strength and energy and tracing patterns of infinite beauty. The colours harmonise with the strong image of the statue, becoming one and creating an atmosphere of profound emotion and inner reflection. The faithful and visitors alike remain in awe of the Madonnina.
