The ceremony this morning with the Veneranda Fabbrica President and the Dean Azzone

Politecnico di Milano and the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano signed an agreement of scientific cooperation for a period of three years.

The great flow of visitors to the Duomo di Milano, which will reach 80 thousand per day on the occasion of Expo 2015, makes necessary a particular effort to safeguard the beauty, security and safety of this ancient monument, undisputed symbol of the city of Milan in the world.

After the impressive restoration works, aimed at introducing the Duomo at its best at the international meeting with the World Fair, conservation takes its turn: an activity that will never end, and which needs a continuous intervention on the monument.

In particular, Politecnico di Milano, through the signing of ad-hoc research agreements for each project, will be involved in the following activities:

- Analysis of the actual condition of the Duomo and planning of interventions for ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of monumental works and technical infrastructures, as power and lighting;

- technical and scientific support of the activities involving survey, knowledge, conservation and monitoring of structures and surfaces of the Duomo, and of works linked with it, with the goal of maximising the interventions of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance;

- research on and test of new materials, technologies, solutions, and anything necessary to the improvement of the safeguard of the Duomo materials, aiming at enhancing the effectiveness and durability of the interventions of conservation and ordinary and extraordinary maintenance.

The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, facing the important change it is experiencing and the increasing number of worshippers and tourists who every year visit the Monument, symbol of Milan in the world, needs to be aided by top-level expertise in the field of security and maintenance, both ordinary and extraordinary, of the Cathedral. The Monument, in fact, presents so many critical points that it needs a qualified planning and the most sophisticated technologies to grant a monitoring that evaluates all the emergencies, for an adequate programming of the interventions. For this reason, the Board of the Veneranda Fabbrica entrusted a university institution, renowned in the scientific and technological fields, such as Politecnico di Milano, with the supply of a series of services and specific activities, on the basis of a three year agreement in which skills and research, innovation and knowledge handed down for over seven centuries will merge, with a unique goal: the safeguard of this extraordinary heritage belonging not only to the city, but to the entire world” – declares Mons. Gianantonio Borgonovo, President of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano.

“After years of productive cooperation with the Veneranda Fabbrica in many activities – declares the Politecnico di Milano Dean, Giovanni Azzonewe are glad to seal with this agreement our cooperation relation and consequently make our expertise available, in a continuous and focused way, for the security and maintenance of the most important gothic work in Italy, the Duomo di Milano”.
