Monsignor Mario Delpini is the new Archbishop of Milan. Pope Francis’s nomination was communicated at noon on Friday, 7 July in the Archbishop’s Chapel by Cardinal Angelo Scola and was simultaneously made known in a news bulletin by the Vatican’s press office. The announcement was greeted with the festive ringing of the Duomo’s bells and those of all of the Ambrosian parishes.
The President of the Veneranda Fabbrica, Monsignor Gianantonio Borgonovo, had the following message for the newly appointed Archbishop:
“Most revered excellency, your appointment as pastor of the Archdiocese of Milan, gives me the opportunity to extend, also on behalf of the Board of Directors and all of the Veneranda Fabbrica’s employees and collaborators, our most heartfelt well wishes for the important assignment entrusted to you by the Holy Father, succeeding His Most Revered Eminence, Cardinal Angelo Scola.
‘If the priests are holy, so shall the people be holy’: drawing upon Saint Charles’ programme of life, which is summarized in the words engraved on the urn of the blessed Card. Andrea Ferrari in the Duomo, “I love its people, I love the catechises”, I am certain that your valuable experience as successor of the Apostles and as Vicar General will fertilize the Ambrosian soil with the energy of the word that is Way, Truth, and Life, accompanied by a clear and courageous faith, so necessary during this particularly difficult time for Milan and the world, in which our city and Archdiocese are called upon to respond with energy and conviction to so many challenges.
Aware that the Duomo, seat of the Archbishop’s Cathedral and each year a destination for five million worshippers and visitors, is certainly one of your priorities, I hope that under your ministry there will be occasion for us to meet so that I may present the many projects and initiatives that the Veneranda Fabbrica, ever faithful to the task entrusted to it over half a millennium ago and this year celebrating the 630th anniversary of its foundation, continues to develop with resolute determination, through its restoration sites and the ability of its skilled workers. In renewing my warmest wishes, please also accept my most humble welcome."
At 9pm on 8 September, the festival of Santa Maria Nascente, Cardinal Scola will perform a Holy Mass of Thanksgiving in the Duomo. The new Archbishop will officially fill the position on 24 September.
