An important milestone is approaching for the Duomo, the international symbol of Milan: the completion of the new exterior lighting system. In fact, over the past few days, the Veneranda Fabbrica's Board of Directors gave the final go ahead on an important 4-year agreement stipulated with the City of Milan and A2A to enhance the Cathedral's exterior lighting, something that will make it possible for tourists and residents of Milan to admire this symbolic monument in all its glory in the evening and at night as well.
Work will begin soon and, after the completion of the Cathedral's new interior lighting (inaugurated 1 May 2015) and that of the Madonnina, the façade, and the windows (completed for Christmas 2016), will entail the refurbishment of the lighting around the perimeter as well as that of the upper portion of the Duomo, including the roofing and the spires. The new exterior lighting project should be completed by the end of December 2018, at which time the Duomo will finally shine in all its splendour, bathed entirely in new light.
"Representing all of the people of Milan, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano writes the final chapter in its ‘story of light’, shared, over the past few years, with the city and its millions of visitors. After the refurbishment of the Cathedral's interior lighting, that of the Madonnina, the façade, and the windows, the Fabbrica will next work to illuminate the Duomo's external perimeter. A milestone made possible also thanks to our collaboration with the City of Milan, a sign of renewed synergy that we hope will shine the spotlight once more on the needs of the monument, which, to live, also requires the participation of those entities, both public and private, that flourish by its light." These were the words of Fedele Confalonieri, President of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano .
The Duomo's new exterior lighting system will include an additional 196 spotlights with respect to the 378 currently installed by A2A (not yet LED), bringing the total number to 574, of which 368 are allocated to the Duomo's terraces and 206 will be distributed among surrounding poles and buildings.
The Veneranda Fabbrica, based on the executive design entrusted to engineer Pietro Palladino from the Ferrara Palladino and Associates studio in 2016 (approved by Milan's Superintendence of Fine Art and Landscape) has purchased new light fittings for the system. Thus everything is ready to go. The choice of fixtures, specifically designed by ERCO, continues to focus on efficiency and respect for the environment, favouring LED technology which will reduce annual energy consumption by 52%, avoiding the emission of 23,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Furthermore, the Veneranda Fabbrica will, at its own expense, handle the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of the lighting system installed on the Duomo portion.
A2A will oversee the installation of the light fittings and the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance in the areas surrounding the monument. It will also be responsible for installing the counters for the new lighting system, sectioning them in such as way as to be able to accurately measure the energetic consumption of the Duomo.
The City of Milan, recognising the financial expenses incurred by the company, will pay A2A for the cost of installation and will also assume the costs of energy consumption, limiting the annual use of the spotlights positioned on the Duomo to 3,650 hours per year.
