An agreement with Alipay for cultural tourism centred on the Duomo for Chinese visitors

Easy payment methods for tourists from the Far East, also in partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo

Alipay, the largest mobile payment platform in the world managed by Ant Financial Services Group (an Alibaba Group company) with over 870 million registered users commences its partnership with Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo today by making use of Intesa Sanpaolo’s acquiring services, which allow to accept cashless payments via POS terminals. Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo is the historical institution for the preservation and improvement of the Lombardy capital city’s Cathedral, a symbolic monument for the city and its inhabitants, and the target of more than 2 million tourists every year.

The agreement focuses on improving information and hospitality services, and access for Chinese tourists. By showing the Alipay app installed on their smartphone, they can make cashless payments using Intesa Sanpaolo’s enabled POS terminals at official ticket offices and at the Duomo Shop. The app will also allow access to special offers and dedicated services.

This is an important indication of the intention to meet the requests of Chinese tourists who are accustomed to using the mobile phone and Alipay app for all purchases as they are familiar with the interface and dialogue in their own language. It is also an excellent opportunity for the institution to improve hospitality and increase the numbers of visitors from the Far East.

The importance of this initiative for the company was underscored by Jane Jiang’s presence when the agreement was signed. As founding partner of Alibaba and current Chief-of-Staff for International Business Alibaba, she says, “We consider Italy a very promising country for our development strategies in which we are investing now and will go on doing in the future. Cultural tourism is a powerful attraction for Chinese nationals who love to travel, and Duomo di Milano is the target par excellence of Chinese tourists in Europe. This partnership is part of Alipay’s action plan for Italy, which is designed to expand the presence of mobile payment services in many tourist sites for the Chinese community, considering its deep interested in exploring the amazing historical and artistic heritage of our country. The agreement is one of the many partnerships entered into by Alipay in 2018 to offer visitors a unique travel experience of culture, landscape, hospitality, wine and gastronomy, without neglecting the pleasure of shopping.
