Holy Week commences on Palm Sunday, with the dual memory of Jesus entering Jerusalem (Holy Mass and procession) and the anointing of Bethany (Holy Mass on the day). The oldest documents of the Ambrosian liturgy call it Hebdomada authentica (Authentic Week), the "eminent" week of all the weeks of the liturgical year and, then, typical and regulatory week.

The most suggestive and absorbing celebration of this Sunday is the Blessing and Procession of Olive and Palm branches presided by Archbishop Monsignor Mario Delpini.

The rite begins at 10.30 am at the church of Santa Maria Annunciata in Camposanto, annexed to the Palazzo della Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo. From the subsidiary church the Procession, accompanied by the songs of the Music Chapel, makes its way along the entire southern side of the Cathedral, reaching the high parvis of the Square to enter the Cathedral and close with the celebration of the Pontifical High Mass.
