As is intended by the liturgy, Lent is the “favourable time” to walk towards the Lord’s Easter.

“Daily perils distract us and illnesses of the spirit – and not only – corrode us, invisibly. The Spirit works within us, to recreate us as disciples, day after day, with delicacy and strength, giving us the energy we do not have, making the soul’s gaze clear, honing the ear to listen to the Words, rendering our heart docile”.

In its Lent Lectionary, the Church of Milan holds an ecclesial heritage of unique importance that, together with the Lectionary for the Easter Triduum and the Easter Octave (or Low Sunday), constitutes the source and original core of the ambrosian tradition.

In the Liturgy of the Word, the weekdays (from Monday to Thursday) have maintained that particular ternary structure composed of the two Readings from the First Testament and from a passage from the Gospels.

For the first four weeks, the continuous reading of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is proposed, preceded by two Readings with pericopes taken respectively from the Book of Genesis and that of Proverbs: a very ancient catechetical tradition, of which we also find reference to in the writings of Saint Ambrose.
