Mary's joyful canticle illuminates and reveals the meaning of this solemnity: "My soul magnifies the Lord, for he has looked upon the humility of his handmaid. Great things has the Almighty done for me' (Gospel). In the intention of the liturgy, her Magnificat must become the song of every man and woman. The Virgin Mary, whom we contemplate in the mystery of her Assumption, is the image and the first fruits of the new humanity, redeemed by Jesus' Easter, and offers herself to the disciple, who lives in the travails of history, as "a sign of consolation and sure hope" (Preface).
"The Magnificat is a song of praise that we could call "the canticle of hope". It is a hymn of praise and exultation for the great things the Lord has accomplished in her, but Mary goes further: she contemplates God's work in the entire history of her people. Mary sings hope and rekindles hope in us, in her we see the goal of the journey" (Pope Francis).
