Information on the Cathedral Church

The Duomo, as the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Milan, welcomes anyone who wishes to enter it to pray and contemplate its beauty and the works of art it contains. The presence of large numbers of tourists however make it necessary to comply with a number of rules regarding behaviour, propriety of dress and observance of silence.

Everyday, from 8.00 am to 7.00 pm (last admission at 6.30 pm), the access through the farthest north portal – Porta Minerbi, on the left side of the Cathedral is reserved to worshippers.

From 7.00 am to 8.30 am everyday, worshippers are able to enter also through the Cathedral side doors (Piazza del Duomo, Arcivescovado side).

To exit from the reserved area for private prayer, it is possible to use the Median North Portal – Porta Castiglioni.

To worshippers are reserved: the farthest north nave (with the tomb of card. Martini), the area of the central nave closest to the Main Altar, the Madonna dell’Albero transept, the Cappella Feriale and the access to the Masses’ Sacristies.

For personal prayer in Cathedral near the Main Altar ,the pulpit, the Tabernacle and the Chair of the Bishop, the worshippers can remain in the nave, on the dedicated benches overlooking the presbytery.

A pass is available for the worshippers who daily access the Cathedral: the pass grants access also in the area housing the urns of the Blessed Archbishops, card. Andrea Ferrari, card. Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster, card. Dionigi Tettamanzi, the relic of Blessed card. Giovanni Battista Montini (Paolo VI) and the Crypt of St.Charles. In particular, the Crypt of St.Charles, from Monday to Saturday, from 9.30 am to 11.00 am, is reserved only to personal prayer (with direct access to the reserved area). The pass can be requested free in the Masses Sacristy of the Duomo.

All the tourist and Parish groups that who intend not only to pray, but to also take a tour of the Duomo, are required to use the amplification system, available for rent at the Group visits Office in Piazza Duomo on the right side of the Cathedral, in front of Palazzo Reale.

If the group already has its own amplification system (radioguides) can use it within the Monumental Complex of the Cathedral. It is forbidden the use of loudspeakers and other different amplification systems.

“Get Your Spire”
The history of the Duomo has always been linked to the generosity of great families and illustrious patrons. The difficult task of building the Cathedral has always found that the wish for public recognition provided the spur for the donations which permitted the Fabbrica to overcome the daily problems and continue its work. Following the examples of Gian Galeazzo Visconti and Marco Carelli, the Veneranda Fabbrica wishes count once again on the generosity of donors, with the invitation to “Adopt a Spire”, thus linking the donors' names, that of their families or companies to one of the 135 spires and pinnacles of the Duomo.
