The marble workers’ site

It is the laboratory where takes place the processing of marble from the Candoglia quarries to obtain the squared blocks, the architectural elements and the decorations, sculptures and statues that make the Milan Cathedral a unique monument.

Around the Duomo, right from its origins, there was a site for stonecutters and sculptors, as the ornamentation and statuary could only be produced from the quarried marble blocks following the measurements and models of the various artists, according to the element they were creating. 

The marble workers’ site changed its location several times over the years: from the Darsena (dock) of Porta Genova, where in Via Arena you can still see the tablet commemorating the concession granted to Veneranda Fabbrica allowing it to unload the marble without payment of the toll, to various locations around the inner ring of the Naviglio canals.

After 1856 the Site moved from the area surrounding Santo Stefano al Laghetto, at the Maggiore hospital, in Via S. Radegonda and in Via Carducci, to the former church of San Gerolamo, and in 1923 it moved to Viale Gorizia, in the Darsena.

In the meantime Veneranda Fabbrica purchased land on the outskirts of the city, in Piazza Cacciatori delle Alpi, where the new site was constructed and is currently operating.This venue is equipped with the latest high-tech equipment, where operates highly specialized workforce among workers milling-machine-trimming unit, stone- cutters, sculptors, apprentices and expert workers.

In fact, for its crystalline formation, its hardness and its chromatic variety, the Candoglia marble has an extremely  variety of application.Currently, in addition to a large variety of shapes and qualities of tools made of iron, steel and diamond grinders of all kinds and hardness, tools are operated with compressed air or electrically in order to reduce the operator physical fatigue and, at the same time, allow an accurate production in halftime.

In range of a progressive technical development, has been introduced the use of machine tools such as pantographs, electric drills, trimming machines and CNC cutting machines that lead the making of artifacts to levels unthinkable only a few years ago, while the artist-sculptor’s remaining the irreplaceable element for the finishing and customization.
