It is a cusped panel depicting on one side (verso) the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple<\/strong>, with Mary and the elderly Simeon and Anna (the protagonists of the Gospel episode proclaimed on this feast: Luke 2:22-40), and <strong>on the other (recto) the Virgin enthroned with the Child. It is the work of Michelino da Besozzo and dates back to the 15th century.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the Middle Ages,<strong> the Procession<\/strong> came to the Cathedral from the church of Santa Maria Beltrade, which stood at the Piazza of the same name, along Via Torino. <strong>Nowadays, however, it takes place inside the Cathedral, where candles are blessed and distributed to the Canons and the faithful; a large candle is also lit on the cusp of the <em>\u00cddea<\/em>,<\/strong> as a survival of a very ancient custom, that of adorning the Cross or sacred images with lighted candles, as a sign of festivity and honour. During the procession, the \u00cddea is carried on the shoulders, on a special stretcher, by two deacons and, at the end, remains exposed at the high altar, during the Eucharistic celebration.<br \/>\nThere has been much debate among scholars about the origin of the name <em>\u00cddea<\/em> given to this Marian image. According to some, it derives from the pagan cult of <em>Magna Mater \u00cddea<\/em>, i.e. Cybele, mother of the gods, in whose honour processions were held in antiquity to invoke the fertility of the earth: in this case, we would be faced with the Christianisation of ancient pagan cults, through the polemical substitution of Cybele, called by the appellation \u00cddea and considered the mother of the gods, with the true \u00cddea, the Mother of God, Mary Most Holy. Other scholars have considered this explanation unconvincing and propose to interpret the term <em>\u00cddea<\/em> in its Greek etymological meaning: simply equal to \u2018image\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On Saturday 1 February, on the eve of World Day for Consecrated Life, at 5.30 p.m., Archbishop Monsignor Mario Delpini presides at the Cathedral the Rite of Blessing of the Candles and the Procession with the icon of <em>Our Madonna of the \u00cddea<\/em>, followed by Mass<\/strong>, with the participation of the Metropolitan Chapter and the Religious of the Diocese.<\/p>\n                                <\/div>\n                                                            <\/div>\n                        <\/div>\n                        <div class=\"col-12 col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 col-xxl-6 order-md-3 right\">\n                                                    <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"featured_media":43138,"template":"","event_cat":[171],"class_list":["post-43161","liturgical","type-liturgical","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","event_cat-celebrations"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
