«It is the faith of the people that is expressed in their Duomo, it is the entire community, it is the entire society, it is their whole history» (Pope Paul VI, Audience to Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, 24 November 1963).
In the Ambrosian liturgy, the 3rd Sunday of October celebrates the anniversary of the Dedication (consecration) of the Duomo.
The 3rd Sunday of October is the Sunday on which the history of Duomo di Milano records some of its most significant moments: the re-consecration, in 453, by Archbishop St. Eusebius, of the ancient Chiesa Maggiore that was devastated by the Huns; the Dedication of the current Duomo by Archbishop St. Charles Borromeo in 1577; the Dedication, in 1986, under Archbishop Carlo Maria Martini, of the new altar of the Duomo, following adaptation works of the presbytery required by the application of liturgical and pastoral orientations defined by the 2nd Vatican Council.
The Duomo is not merely an artistic Monument of rare beauty, it is especially the Cathedral Church, the Mother Church of all the Ambrosian faithful, the episcopal see from where the bishop celebrates mass, and where he exercises his ministry as pastor and teacher. The reason why the anniversary of the Duomo’s Dedication is celebrated in the entire Diocese of Milan and in the communities of the Dioceses of Lugano, Novara and Bergamo, which follow the Ambrosian Rite to date, is especially religious. Every Ambrosian considers the Duomo not only one of the most representative images of the city of Milan, but an evident sign of unity in faith and in its particular liturgical tradition.
The Cathedral Chapter is entrusted with organising the Duomo’s daily liturgical life, ensuring prayer for the whole diocesan community.
This feast necessarily refers also to the uninterrupted activity of Veneranda Fabbrica that, since 16 October 1387 (date when its first Regulation was deposited), has supervised the «great machine of the Duomo» (Alessandro Manzoni), first the construction and then the preservation and value enhancing process of the Cathedral.
