Eucharistic celebration at the altar of San Giovanni Bono

9.30 a.m. – 10 a.m.

The most evocative and popular ritual of Palm Sunday (this year on 29 March) is undoubtedly the Blessing and Procession of the Olive and Palm Branches, presided over in the Cathedral by the Archbishop himself.

In the past, the Procession began at the side altar dedicated to St. Giovanni Bono, who was Bishop of Milan during a particularly difficult period in the history of the Milanese Church. In fact, when the Lombards invaded in 569 and the bishops of Milan went into voluntary exile in Genoa, it was St. Giovanni Bono – according to tradition, a native of Recco, in the province of Genoa – who, in the mid-7th century, brought the bishopric back to Milan.

Because of these historical ties, on the Thursday before Palm Sunday, a delegation from the Parish and Municipality of Recco travels to Milan to offer palm and olive branches, a festive sign of Easter peace.

The celebration is scheduled for Thursday 26 March at 9.30 a.m. at the altar of St. Giovanni Bono and is open to all the faith community.
