Friday of Lent

Friday of Lent

In the Ambrosian liturgy, Fridays during Lent are “aliturgical days,” on which the Eucharist is not celebrated.

CELEBRATION TIMETABLES:
7 a.m. Via Crucis
8 a.m. Morning Praise and Midday Prayer
11 a.m. Liturgy of the Word
12:45 p.m. Via Crucis

4:30 p.m. Exposition of the Relic of the Holy Cross for personal adoration
5:30 p.m. Vespers, Lenten Catechesis, and Benediction with the Relic of the Holy Cross

In the unique liturgical tradition of the Church of Milan, Fridays during Lent—similar to Good Friday—are aliturgical days, on which the Eucharist is not celebrated and Communion is not distributed. This peculiarity, which brings the Ambrosian liturgy closer to the Eastern liturgy, is a sign of a more intimate participation in the Mystery of the Lord’s Passion and a more intense anticipation of Sunday Eucharist.

In addition to the communal celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours and prolonged listening to the Word of God, the adoration of the Relic of the Holy Cross and the pious exercise of the Via Crucis are also proposed.

The first Friday of Lent (February 27) and Good Friday (April 3) are days of fasting, as well as abstinence from meat: fasting is required of all adults up to the age of 60, while abstinence from meat is required of those who have reached the age of 14.

It is possible to follow the celebration of Vespers with Lenten Catechesis (5:30 p.m.) via live streaming on this website (www.duomomilano.it) from the Duomo Milano TV YouTube channel.
