This solidarity initiative by the Veneranda Fabbrica has its roots in Valpantena which, after seven centuries and thanks to the collaboration with La Collina dei Ciliegi, rediscovers the age-old tradition of using wine as a source of finance in support of the restoration of the Cathedral, international symbol of Milan.

In fact, wine and the Duomo are the protagonists of a dialogue began thanks to the generosity of the many Milanese who, in order to support the construction of the nascent cathedral, donated not only money, but also clothing, jewellery, objects, and raw materials that the Veneranda Fabbrica reused on the construction site or auctioned off to finance the work. Amongst these other forms of donation, as noted in the donation registers still conserved today in the Veneranda Fabbrica's Archives, one constant was that of wine.

Indeed, it is "The Wine of Duomo", a Red IGT (Typical Geographical Indication) from Verona produced for the occasion by the Veronese winery, that interprets the evolution of a virtuous patronage that, in the 14th century, saw citizens and entire communities hand over brente of wine (75.55 litres) to officials of the Veneranda Fabbrica, the proceeds of which were destined to cover the new Cathedral's construction costs.

A three-year project that sees the creation of two special-edition wines produced in Italy for Milan Duomo and the participation in the Veneranda Fabbrica's fundraising project "Adopt a Statue".

THE WINES

The Red Igt Verona:An elegant bottle with the label signed by the most highly-awarded wine designer in the world, Mario di Paolo, it preserves a Corvina, ruby red in colour with purplish hues. Expressive notes of wild strawberries, crunchy cherries, and violets hit the nose, while the palate is struck by snappy and juicy flavours, lengthening towards the end with a marked sapidity. It goes well with Italian antipasti, soups, and pasta dishes, also ideal as a summer red wine for fresh fish dishes.

The Spumante Brut Charmat Method: Produced from Garganega and Chardonnay grapes, this wine is yellowish in colour, lightly sparkling, with an intense attack and very pleasant finish. An agile and fun wine to drink, suitable for any occasion, perfect to enjoy alone as an aperitif, and exceptional when accompanied with seafood crudités.

GENERALFINANCE AND THE COLLINA DEI CILIEGI: ADOPT A STATUE

La Collina dei Ciliegi, thanks to Generalfinance, who have adhered to the Veneranda Fabbrica's fundraising campaign "Adopt a Statue", have been hosting the Cathedral's statue known as Giant 29 since September.

The initiative aims at enhancing some of Milan Duomo's statues which, for conservation reasons, can no longer be left on display in the Cathedral and so have been deposited in the Marble Workshop, the Veneranda Fabbrica's laboratory on the outskirts of the city where new sculptures destined for the Monument, as well as those more structurally fragile, find shelter.

The work, restored to its original beauty by the skilled hands of specialised restorers, has been entrusted to Generalfinance for a period of three years, currently located and exhibited in the Barricaia – the most noble area of the Wine Cellar – of La Collina dei Ciliegi in Erbin (Grezzana, Verona) to celebrate – in a symbolic journey – the places that represent the roots of Generalfinance.
