EVENING OPENINGS OF DUOMO ROOFTOPS

Also for 2023, given the success recorded last year, Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano welcomes summer with a rich calendar of events and guided tours of the Cathedral Rooftops.

From 1 June to 31 August 2023, every Thursday (except 8 June), when the sunset shades shine upon the precious pink marble of Candoglia, Visitors will have the incredible opportunity to enjoy the majestic spectacle of the hundred and thirty-five spires and the many statues that populate the walls of the Duomo in the evening.

Visitors will be able to exceptionally access the Cathedral Rooftops by lift (from € 15.00 full / € 7.50 reduced), until 10pm (with the last climb scheduled at 8:40pm), to admire, from a privileged point of view, the solemn and silent stone forest, the beautiful ornaments and the Madonnina in the most evocative moment of the day: the sunset.

For the occasion also the Ticket Office 3 - Groups Duomo Info Point (Piazza del Duomo, on the facade, right side) will remain open until 8:30pm.

An experience made even more enchanting thanks to a special live musical accompaniment that, from about 8:30pm, will delight the visit of all those present among the spires of the Cathedral. The notes of many artists and musical performers will echo on the Duomo Terraces, rising to the sky to welcome the arrival of the evening.

The evening opening starts on Thursday, June 1, with the clarinet of Sergio del Mastro and the oboe of Omar Zoboli.

FROM 10 JUNE THE CANDOGLIA QUARRY OPENS ITS DOORS TO PUBLIC: GUIDED TOURS TO EXPLORE "DUOMO'S SOURCES"

From Saturday, June 10 2023, the Candoglia Quarry (not far away from Ossola Valley, and confining with Piedmont), the place where the precious marble of the Duomo have been extracted for over six centuries, finally reopens to guided tours.

Veneranda Fabbrica offers exclusive tours to discover this enchanting mountain where everything began, with an itinerary to retrace all the charm of the marble streets and relive the great work of workers and stonecutters, engaged in the construction and maintenance of the Cathedral, the symbol of Milan.

The initiative is also possible thanks to the valuable collaboration of the Municipality of Mergozzo (VB). It was Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Lord of Milan, who decided to replace the brick, originally designed for the construction of the Duomo, with marble. For this purpose, on 24 October 1387, he gave the Candoglia Quarry to Veneranda Fabbrica for its exclusive use and granted the free transport of the marble to Milan via the waterways.

The small width of the vein of this marble makes its extraction difficult and expensive. This uncertainty, however, has never stopped the Veneranda Fabbrica's commitment, which still faces the great task of preserving the Monument with responsibility, taking care of the maintenance of the quarry thanks to the use of highly qualified personnel and with the support of technologies.
