- 5.30 p.m. Chapter Eucharist and celebration of Vespers
In the days following the Ascension, in the intention of the liturgy, we are especially prepared to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. We thus begin the Ambrosian Church’s oldest practice, which distinguishedFifty Easter days: forty days from Easter to Ascension (Thursday of the sixth week) and ten days leading up to Pentecost. In this last section, in fact, the Church must relive the experience of the Apostles who, deprived of the tangible presence of the Lord among them, waited in prayer for the expression of the comforting Spirit.
At the centre of the so-called Pentecost Novena is the spousal theme: the Ambrosian Lectionary highlights the spiritual tension of the Church-Bride towards Christ the Bridegroom, reading some sections from chapters 14-16 of John's Gospel (the Disciples' Farewell Address) and of the Song of Songs (the bride's search for the groom).
In the Cathedral, on weekdays from Friday, May 31st to Friday, June 7th, at 5.30 p.m., the Chapter Mass among Vespers is celebrated, in preparation for the solemnity of Pentecost (this year, Sunday, June 9th).
