According to Ambrosian tradition, particularly in the liturgy proper to the Cathedral Church, the Solemnity of Pentecost, as well as Christmas and Epiphany, is introduced by a grand vigil celebration.
The Mass is included in the Vespers Prayer: after the Lucernario and the Vespers Hymn, four First Testament Readings are proclaimed, followed by the Epistle (taken from the First Letter to the Corinthians) and the Gospel page of John (16:5-14), with the promise of the gift of the Spirit. After Communion, Vespers concludes with the singing of the Magnificat.
