According to the Ambrosian tradition, particularly in the liturgy of the Cathedral Church, the Solemnity of Pentecost, like Christmas and Epiphany, is preceded by a grand vigil celebration.

The Mass is incorporated into the evening prayer: after the Lucernarium and the Hymn of Vespers, four readings from the First Testament are proclaimed, followed by the Epistle (taken from the First Letter to the Corinthians) and the Gospel passage from John (16:5–14), with the promise of the gift of the Spirit. After Communion, Vespers conclude with the singing of the Magnificat.
