MARTYR SAINT

Central south terrace Spire-G93

The spire is located on the south side of the central Terrace, near the dome lantern. On the top of the spire is a nineteenth century sculpture, probably of a martyr saint. The statue can be more precisely dated to the first half of the 1800s and has the features of a neoclassical sculpture. The saint is represented as a young man with long hair, wearing a tunic which leaves his chest uncovered and which he supports with his right hand. His left arm is raised and in his hand he grasps an element which has been lost, probably a palm, a sword or a cross.
