Saint Julian the Hospitaller is the protector of the city of Macerata, where he is represented everywhere. His history, however, is not certain: Julian lived in the 7th century in Belgium and was a noble knight. He was shocked by a dire prophecy, which announced to Julian that he would kill his parents; Precisely for this reason he ran away from home and later married a chatelaine. One day his parents, who had been looking for him in vain for years, found themselves by chance near his new home and were warmly welcomed by their daughter-in-law: Giuliano, unaware of his parents’ presence, went into the bedroom, where he killed his parents. Convinced that he discovered his wife’s betrayal. Giuliano, desperate by what had happened, decided to dedicate his life to prayers and to the needy, also followed by his wife. He moved to Macerata, where he opened an inn to host travellers. His repentance was later accepted.
Tales of the statue in Dome’s building site:
The statue of San Giuliano that can be admired on Spire G76 of the north transept was created around 1954, on the model created by the sculptor Angelo Ferreri, and is the original. There is still no certainty as to who actually carried it out, whether it was Ferreri himself or a worker active on the Veneranda Fabbrica construction site.
