Marcellinus was a martyr in Cori together with his brothers Argeo and Narcissus. He was recruited among the archers at the time of Licinus, between the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 4th century, but he refused to perform military service, being a Christian: he was thus imprisoned and thrown into the sea, but managed to have a worthy burial on the coast. The bodies of the three brothers rested in Cori until Pope Leo IV took them, together with others, to Rome, to the Basilica of SS. Four Crowned.
The tales of the statue in Dome’s building site:
The statue of the martyr saint Marcellino was commissioned in 1812 to the sculptor Pietro Possenti that managed to place it on the spire number 27 the following year, in the 1813. The realization of the statue by Possenti is a certain fact since in the annals of the Veneranda Fabbrica the payment towards the sculptor sent in 1813 can be found. It’s very possible that the statue of the saint that can be seen today, at the sud side of the cathedral, is a faithful reproduction of the 30s.
