“Steel for Art” is the project that dresses Milan Duomo in steel.
On Monday, June 24, thanks to the fruitful collaboration between Veneranda Fabbrica and Marcegaglia, a leading company in the field of civil and industrial construction for the processing of steel, an event was held to present the new roofing that covers the “cesata”, the historic structure on the right side of the Cathedral where the Duomo site stands.
80 Cromatica panels, made with an innovative digital printing technology on coil, developed by the Mantua-based steel group and used for the historic Monumental Complex, a symbol of the Lombard capital.
Emma and Antonio Marcegaglia, head of the family group, together with Fedele Confalonieri, Veneranda Fabbrica’s President, unveiled the plaque affixed to the new structure to celebrate this innovative industrial and artistic project. Attilio Fontana, President of Regione Lombardia, Alessandro Spada, President of Assolombarda, and Alessia Cappello, Assessor for Economic Development and Labor Policies of Comune di Milano, spoke at the event as well.
THE PROJECT:
A team of architects, in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, has reproduced the texture of the Cathedral’s marble thanks to Cromatica technology, aiming at integrating the service spaces at the disposal of tourists and those related to the construction site, in a context of absolute art and beauty.
Each panel is the result of a study of the original architectural structure and a faithful photographic reproduction of the technical drawings. Taking advantage of these photo-reproductions and through innovative graphics programs, it was possible to divide the facade into small portions and make samples that would allow the most appropriate one to be chosen. Once the final design was selected, Marcegaglia moved on to the printing stage, which was carried out by the enterprise itself at their plant located in Ravenna.
