On April 16th at 7 PM, the exciting St. Matthew Passion BWV 244 by Bach returns to the Cathedral. performed by the instrumental and vocal Ensemble LaBarocca conducted by Ruben Jais
On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 7:00 PM, the St. Matthew Passion (Matthäuspassion) BWV 244 by Johann Sebastian Bach returns to the Milan Cathedral, performed by the Instrumental and Vocal ensemble laBarocca conducted by Ruben Jais.
Punctual as every year, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, in fact, offers the performance of the wonderful repertoire consisting of Bach’s Passions during the Easter period.
This event, now a true must-see in the Milanese Easter calendar, takes on a particular symbolic meaning this year as well, in a historical moment troubled by the horrors of destruction: an invocation for peace, on the eve of the Easter Triduum.
An initiative resulting from the hospitality of the Archpriest of the Duomo, Mons. Gianantonio Borgonovo, with the Capitolo Metropolitano and the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo.
For the occasion, the Pueri Cantores of the Milan Cathedral’s Musical Chapel will join the Instrumental and Vocal Ensemble laBarocca.
An international cast completes the ensembles on stage for the masterpiece of the Genius of Eisenach, universally considered one of the highest artistic expressions in the history of music: Andreas Post (Evangelist), Marco Saccardin (Jesus), Maria Dalia Albertini (Soprano), Gabriel Dìaz (Alto), Massimo Altieri (Tenor), and Mauro Borgioni (Baritone).
Luca Scaccabarozzi is the Chorus Master. Conducting is Ruben Jais, founder of the Ensemble and current Superintendent of the Fondazione Toscanini.
The concert will also be available in streaming on the YouTube channel of the Duomo di Milano (Duomo Milano TV) and accessible from the website www.duomomilano.it.
First presented to the public in 1727 in Leipzig, in St. Thomas Church, precisely on Good Friday, the musical transposition of chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel according to Matthew, with a libretto by the poet Picander, was no longer performed after the death of Johann Sebastian Bach. In the spring of 1829, in a Berlin long permeated by Romantic fervor, Felix Mendelssohn had the merit of having the then unknown composition performed for the first time, which aroused immense enthusiasm in the public and music lovers. One hundred and ninety years after that memorable revival, the composition has never ceased to excite the musical world for its musical depth and unattainable dramatic intensity.
