In the Church, the Virgin Mary is the image and first fruit of the new humanity, redeemed by Christ, and she presents herself to the disciple of every age as a ‘sign of consolation and sure hope’ (preface). Her Magnificat illuminates and reveals the meaning of this solemnity. The salvation promised by God is brought about in an unexpected way, overturning the world’s expectations: «He has looked upon the humility of his handmaid. He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty-handed» (Gospel).

In her – the true Mother of the Son – the vocation of every man and woman is described. The Lord’s love is the hope that guides and sustains each person’s life: let us unite our spirit to the exultation of Mary’s heart, so that we may contemplate in her our destiny of glory and be able to look upon our present and every movement of life with new eyes.
