Messa Arcaica for soloists, choir and orchestra by Franco Battiato

On Thursday May 16 in Milan Cathedral a unique and extraordinary event with a performance of the liturgical work by the celebrated artist and composer three years after his death

Fondazione Franco Battiato, recently established on the initiative of President Grazia Cristina Battiato, granddaughter of the famous artist Franco Battiato, a visionary songwriter and composer who has left a profound mark on music, poetry and art in Italy, will inaugurate its activities with an extraordinary event. On May 16, 2024, in the heart of Milan, the majestic Duomo will host Messa Arcaica for soloists, choir and orchestra, 30 years after its first recording release.

This liturgical work, first performed in 1993 in Assisi’s Upper Basilica and recorded the following year, will resonate through the aisles of the Cathedral in its classical partitions (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei) promising an evening of intense emotion and spirituality, faithful to the master’s rich legacy.

The performers in this event: Coro da Camera di Torino conducted by Maestro Dario Tabbia and the Orchestra da Camera Canova under the leadership of Maestro Antonio Ballista, Carlo Guaitoli on piano and Angelo Privitera keyboards and programming, the voices of Lorna Windsor, mezzo-soprano, and Giovanni Caccamo in the role that was Battiato’s own.

The concert, organized by IMARTS – International Music and Arts, with the support of Fondazione Franco Battiato ETS, was made possible thanks to the hospitality of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo with its Musical Chapel and the Milan Metropolitan Chapter. The event aims to commemorate Franco Battiato as a cultural landmark, combining music, spirituality and history in a unique context. This concert pays tribute to one of the most eclectic and influential artists on the Italian music scene, whose work has inspired and continues to inspire future generations. Special thanks go to Davide Benetti who inspired and involved us in the making of this concert.

«“Messa Arcaica” is a constant search for beauty, harmony, fluidity of solutions that move within each chosen language. To communicate certain feelings, certain emotions, certain options of the heart, it is necessary to follow well-defined paths. An extremely meaningful experience for me. It taught me how strange this our musical world is: where it happens to be at the center of a mega-rock concert cheer even when playing in a church, even when performing a work that moves along a very tenuous horizontal thread.»
