The one from Monday 25 March at 8 p.m. is a very special appointment at the Milan Auditorium. For the second time, the Musical Chapel of the Milan Duomo, the oldest musical institution in Milan (it has been active uninterruptedly since 1402) and one of the oldest in Europe, directed by its Maestro, Mons. Massimo Palombella, will be performing on its prestigious stage.

Symbolically set on Monday, at the very beginning of what is known in liturgical parlance as ‘Settimana Autentica’, the concert represents the culmination of a long-standing synergic relationship between the Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro Sinfonico di Milano Giuseppe Verdi and the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo.

A musical programme of rare beauty, under the title “Mors tua sit vita nostra“, focuses on the production of Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), focusing in particular on the Officium Hebdomadae Sanctae published in Rome in 1585.

In particular, the Office of Darkness (Officium Tenebrarum) – before the reform of Holy Week by Pius XII in 1955 – was the solemn Matins scheduled for the Holy Triduum (Holy Thursday, Friday and Saturday). The celebration was called ‘of Darkness’, given the time of recitation, but also in relation to the Darkness that descended on earth at the death of Christ, and in reference to the darkness of death, thus evoking the image of the Church groping in the dark without its God.

The Responsors of Tomás Luis de Victoria – that was the largest composite of the Counterfeit in Spain, dedicating exclusively to the sacred music – are real and own masterpieces that we postpone, in some way, figurative arts intervention: each polifonic intervention of the Musical Chapel, dialogue with the solists, can be compared to an intense painting watercolor, and intense, colour, is comparable to the paintings of the contemporary Caravaggio communicating the drama of the passion passion and real vivid and tradimento accents. The juxtaposition will certainly not be daring to those who are able to note the similarity between the strong contrasts of sound, in the former, and colour, in the latter, and the remarkable expressive force even in a small form.
