On the Threshold of History: the Restoration of the Chapter Sacristy

One of the Cathedral’s most ancient and symbolic spaces restored to its original decorative splendor

The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano continues its major project of safeguarding and enhancing the Cathedral’s historical and artistic heritage, bringing new light to the Chapter Sacristy, a place of particular significance for the Ambrosian liturgical tradition, as it is specifically intended for the Archbishop and the Metropolitan Chapter.

The intervention, following the restoration of the Northern Sacristy completed in 2021, is part of a broader program dedicated to the conservation of the entire sacristy system of the Duomo.

As one of the Cathedral’s oldest and most symbolic spaces, the Chapter Sacristy preserves valuable decorative elements and artistic testimonies that, over the centuries, had gradually lost their clarity due to deposits, oxidations, and material layers.

The restoration site has brought back to life the richness of its sculptures, colors, and wooden elements, thanks to the patient and meticulous work carried out by restorers, technicians, and scholars in close collaboration with the Soprintendenza Archeologica Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la città metropolitana di Milano. This important intervention was also made possible thanks to the contribution of all the supporters of the Institution, including the Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti and the Regione Lombardia.

Among the most significant interventions is the restoration of the monumental 14th-century portal leading into the Sacristy, attributed to Hans von Fernach, now once again visible in its original polychrome and gilded appearance. Inside, the works involved the laver sculpted by Giovannino de’ Grassi, the 19th-century ceiling decorations, and the majestic wooden cabinets designed to hold the Cathedral’s vestments and Treasury.

Monsignor Gianantonio Borgonovo, Archpriest of the Duomo and Director of the Cultural and Conservation Area of the Veneranda Fabbrica, commented: “The Chapter Sacristy, the beating heart of our Cathedral’s liturgical life, now reveals itself once again in its rediscovered magnificence. Together with the Northern Sacristy, this primitive core of the Cathedral is a book of stone and color waiting to be reread. Works such as the Portal by Hans von Fernach, now shining once again with its unexpected polychromies and gilding, and the Laver by Giovannino de’ Grassi, revived in its delicate painted decoration, are not mere marbles or frescoes; they are living pages offering new levels of interpretation — theological, political, philosophical — and reconnecting us deeply to the spiritual and cultural legacy of those who once worked here. Through this work, Veneranda Fabbrica acts as a guardian not only of form, but of meaning, giving back to Milan and to the Ambrosian liturgy a place where the history of art is intimately fused with the history of salvation.”
