BLESSED SERVILIAN (SPIRE OF MILANESE PEOPLE)

07 NovemberSouth walkway spire-G63

To date there is only one hypothesis of attribution which sees this statue associated with the figure of the Blessed Servilianus, as research has not yet led to a certain assignment. It could probably be a Holy Martyr who lived in the first quarter of the 19th century and in line with the story of the Blessed Servilianus, a humble and charitable, extroverted and jovial young man. Of Spanish origin and raised in a religious family environment, Serviliano was preparing for the priesthood in the 1930s when, on 22 July 1936, he was imprisoned with all his community brothers in Pozuelo, in the same convent where he was studying. The three-year period 1936-1939 is in fact remembered as a period of suppressions and martyrs for the Church in Spain.

Tales of the statue in Dome’s building site:

The statue that can be admired today was placed on the G63 spire in 1953 and, observing the features of the face, represents a young man dressed only in a drape that leaves his shoulder and right arm and part of his left leg uncovered. His gaze is turned downwards as he concentrates on observing the clasped hands holding a crucifix, as if the Blessed were praying in silence, in the moment of solemn devotion that precedes his martyrdom.
