The news of Claudius’ martyrdom comes from the Martyrology of Adonis, thanks to which we know that Claudius was an army tribune who converted after witnessing a miracle performed by some Christians he was interrogating; he converted together with his wife Ilaria, his sons Giasone and Mauro and 70 soldiers. Having learned of the event, the emperor Numerian ordered Claudius to be thrown into the sea with a stone around his neck, while his two sons and the 70 soldiers were sentenced to beheading. Ilaria was instead arrested when she was intent on burying her children, and was later killed.
Tales of the statue in Dome’s building site:
San Claudio is represented here as a young soldier of the Roman army. There is no information on the period of creation, nor is the name of the sculptor known, even if we know that it is a reproduction.
