Saint Lucian was a scholar and a controversial priest, who suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Maximian in 312. He exhibited his exegetical work throughout the East, with a focus on Antioch, making himself noted for his precision in the texts of Tradition. His review of the Old and New Testaments became the text used by a large number of churches. Constantine decides to honor the martyr’s body in Elenopolis, founded in 330. Important was the baptism of Constantin at the hands of Eustace which took place right at the tomb of Lucian, in 337. This little information we have relating to Lucian is fundamental because it testifies a moment of passage of the Empire.
The tales of the statue in Dome’s building site:
The statue of Saint Lucian was commissioned in 1829 to the sculptor Giuseppe Buzzi. The Saint is depicted with a tunic that softly covers his left shoulder, while his gaze is turned proudly forward, without fear and with firmness, a testimony of faith and righteousness. We don’t know if the statue we see today is a reproduction or the original, dating back to the 19th century.
