SAINT OF THE OATH

South side Spire-G24

The gaze of this young Saint is turned towards the horizon, that border line, the ultimate limit beyond which the gaze cannot go. While the right hand raised to the heart in a solemn gesture that communicates resolution, indicates the conclusion of an embrace. The young Saint seems to call to him the whole city that lies at his feet. The gesture of recollection he makes with his hand seems to symbolize an infinite embrace aimed at the entire population. This magnificent representation of firmness communicates the act of the young Saint’s oath of faith, the completed promise to fulfill obligations towards God and towards the city that hosts him. The fundamental notion of the oath is in fact that of an act or formula with which the divinity is invoked as testimony to the truth of what is affirmed.

The tales of the statue in Dome’s building site:

The events that led this statue to be positioned on the top of Spire G24 are not yet known. We only know that it is a reproduction whose model is the work of Arturo Malerba, author of other spire tops present on the Cathedral. The work was carried out in 1953, the same year in which many other works were also replaced due to deterioration in the marble due to the passage of time and above all to the war events of the previous decade.
