Evening guided tours of the Milan Duomo Museum

The Duomo Musuem is once again opening its doors in the evening for a new edition of Aperitivo ad Arte.

Three special evenings combining history, art and music. The visit during the Museum’s special opening hours will be accompanied by a special musical performance by the Officium Musicum instrumental ensemble and the Schola Cantorum Venerandae Fabricae.

On Tuesday 16 June and Tuesday 21 July, visitors can take part in a guided tour of the Milan Cathedral Museum, with three scheduled departures: at 6.30 p.m. (in English), at 7 p.m. (in Italian) and at 7.30 p.m. (in Italian), accompanied by specialist guides from the Veneranda Fabbrica to admire the treasures and works of art of Milan Cathedral: liturgical life, centuries-old sculpture, goldworkings, exquisitely crafted tapestries, paintings and luminous stained-glass windows. A heritage derived almost entirely from the Duomo, which tells the story of its dual role as both Cathedral and Monument.

On Tuesday 7 July, the evening programme features a guided tour of the Duomo Museum, led by specialist guides from the Veneranda Fabbrica, in three sessions, starting at 6.30 pm in Italian and English, at 7.00 pm (in Italian) and at 7.05 pm (in Italian).

Calendar of events:

Tuesday 16th June

The programme for Tuesday 16 June features a small, carefully selected anthology of madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1634), a prime example of the transition from the language of the Renaissance to the ‘theatre of the emotions’ of the Baroque. Between love and distance, desire and suffering, in this journey, Monteverdi’s music envelops and intertwines the verses of three great voices of Renaissance and late 16th-century lyric poetry: Torquato Tasso, Giovanni Battista Guarini and Ottavio Rinuccini.

Tuesday 7th July

At the end of the guided tour, following an aperitif, the evening will conclude in the Church of San Gottardo in Corte, where the Schola Cantorum Venerandae Fabricae, conducted by Maestro Massimo Palombella, Superintendent of the Musical Heritage of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, will perform one of the most evocative works by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525–1594): “From Eros to Agape. Cantico dei Cantici by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina”.

Tuesday 21st July

The concert on Tuesday 21 July, entitled “Echi impossibili”, is a fascinating journey into the heart of late Renaissance and Baroque performance practice, exploring the refined art of diminution.
The programme unfolds through the contrast and continuity of three masterpieces: the elegance of “Doulce Mémoire”, juxtaposed with the sacredness of “Pulchra es” and the famous contrapuntal texture of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s “Vestiva i colli”. Alongside the vocal polyphonies, the historical diminished versions by Diego Ortiz and Francesco Rognoni do not merely embellish the original music, but reshape the melodic line, transforming the sung text into a tapestry of pure instrumental virtuosity.

To liven up the evenings, a gourmet aperitif will be served in the courtyard of the Duomo Museum, below the bell tower of San Gottardo in Corte, in the shadow of the statue of the Madonnina – an exact 1:1 scale replica created by the Fonderia Nolana del Giudice for Expo Milano 2015.
