Since 1387, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo of Milan has been responsible for the processing of the marble, beginning with its excavation at the Candoglia quarry, continuing with its processing at the Marble Yard in Milan’s Certosa district, and up to the installation of the architectural and decorative elements in Duomo. This is a long and continuous dialogue between the city of Milan and its surrounding area.

From this perspective, the Marble Yard’s activity continues to play a major role throughout the entire process: indeed, in a place where new sculptures and ornaments come to life, hundreds of others are put away. This is because the constant monitoring of the state of preservation of the Cathedral’s sculptural system also involves the necessary replacement of all those elements that, for conservation and safety reasons, can no longer remain in place on the Monument, thus being gathered and stored in the yard.

From these premises, the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo has conceived the “Adopt a Statue” fundraising project which, continuing in the same vein as the “Get your Spire. Carve your name in history” campaign, has originated from the need to enhance, through restoration, a selected number of removed statues from the Duomo which can still tell a story: that of the Cathedral.

The project’s aim, after obtaining the relevant authorisation from the Milan-based Archaeological Superintendence of fine arts and landscape, is that these fine works are adopted by individuals, companies and legal persons who, through their own donation, will be able to support the cleaning/restoration and consolidation * of these works of art.

At the end of the restoration and consolidation operations, the statues may be subject to a loan agreement between the Veneranda Fabbrica and the Donor, with the possibility of moving the works and exhibiting them in spaces outside the Historical Complex, in either case guaranteeing periodical inspections of their condition by the Authority.

Given the specific nature of this initiative, the project is primarily aimed at companies and individuals located in and around Milan.

* The statues have been selected based on their fair state of conservation, for which they do not require particularly invasive restoration work.
