Palm Sunday, with its twofold commemoration of Jesus’ Entry into Jerusalem (Mass combined with the Procession) and the Anointing at Bethany (Mass on the day), introduces us to Holy Week, referred to – since the earliest documents of the Ambrosian liturgy – as Hebdomada authentica (Authentic Week), a ‘pre-eminent’ week amongst all the weeks of the liturgical year and therefore a typical and normative week.
We celebrate the Lord’s Easter: the Mystery of death and resurrection, which calls us not to remain mere silent spectators but asks us to allow ourselves to be drawn in and transformed inwardly by God’s love for us. We express our resolve to follow Jesus to the foot of the cross, overcoming the darkness of betrayal and death, in the certainty that the Lord is the ‘firstborn of those who rise from the dead’ (Epistle: Colossians 1:18).
There are two sentiments in particular that characterise these days: praise, as expressed by those who welcomed Jesus in Jerusalem, and gratitude, because during this “Holy Week” the Lord Jesus renews the gift of his life.
You can watch the Pontifical Mass at 10.30 am and Vespers at 4.30 pm via live stream on this website (www.duomomilano.it) on the Duomo Milano TV YouTube channel.
