What better setting than the enchanting Candoglia Quarries to exceptionally host one of the most evocative musical events of Milan Cathedral’s summer season?
On August 23, 2025, at 5:00 PM, the great Cava Madre located in the Municipality of Mergozzo will welcome the Pecelli String Orchestra’s Concert Soffio Barocco—an artistic and beautiful moment in the cool embrace of a place that, once again for summer 2025, will be tinged baroque notes and evening colors.
This concert is the result of a well-established collaboration between the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano and the Ecomuseo del Granito di Montorfano, part of the Municipality of Mergozzo in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Together, they continue their commitment to promoting and enhancement the region, to discover the wonders of the Candoglia’s marble and the Ossola area.
The Candoglia Quarries, an evocative location of great meaning to the history of Milan Cathedral, invites the public to discover Baroque music from the 17th and 18th centuries, through compositions by Arcangelo Corelli, Tomaso Albinoni and Antonio Vivaldi. A breath of stylistic harmony, reflected both in the music and in the architectural and decorative details sculpted from Candoglia marble— since the Cathedral’s origin, have shaped what is today a unique masterpiece.
On the occasion of the concert—organized once again this year with the collaboration of Mergozzo Si Nota and the Mergozzo Archaeological Group, in synergy with Baveno, City of Granite and the UNESCO Sesia Val Grande Geopark, and with the support of the Fondazione Comunitaria del VCO Ente Filantropico, as part of the 9th edition of the festival La Pietra racconta—the Candoglia Quarries will open to the public at 3:00 PM.
Waiting for the Concert: guided tours to discover the Cava Madre
A shuttle service will escort attendees—divided into small groups—to the entrance of the Candoglia Quarry, where, before to the concert, guests will have the opportunity to join an exclusive 60-minute guided tour to discover the work and restoration sites of the Veneranda Fabbrica.
The shuttle service operates at multiple time slots, allowing visitors to choose their preferred option during the ticket booking process.
Tickets, which include both the concert and shuttle transfer to the Cava Madre (full price €35 – reduced price for ages 12–18: €20), are available exclusively online.
The event takes place in Candoglia, in the Municipality of Mergozzo (VB), approximately 100 km from Milan.
In case of bad weather the initiative will take place at the Church of the Annunciation in Albo di Candoglia, at the same times and always preceded by the extraordinary opening of the Workshops of the Veneranda Fabbrica.
