WINGED ANGEL

02 OctoberSouth side spire-G46

One hand to the heart and one reaching out to the sky, this is how this little one stands on one of the four spiers that crown the Chapel of the virgin Mary of the tree. Elia Buzzi, in the first half of the eighteenth century, sculpted him with a lily branch between his fingers, a symbol of purity linked to the figure of the virgin Mary, no longer visible today but remembered among the words written in the Annals. The outstretched wings remind us of his nature as a pure spirit: capable of rising to God, the angels are his servants and messengers, endowed with intelligence and will. They are personal and immortal creatures, and in perfection surpass all visible creatures; the Cathedral also has its angels sculpted at its side, who guide and protect it.
