ST. AGGAEUS

16 DecemberSpire along the north walkway-G82
Patron Saint: Streets and houses Symbol: Temple, Scroll of Prophecy

Along the side of the Cathedral facing north, the spire of the holy prophet Haggai reminds us that the past has never been as current as the present. Following the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC, Haggai spoke words of encouragement to the Jewish people to urge them to rebuild the Temple in the holy city, as a symbol and place of the people’s cultural identity; after a short time the interest degenerated and everything was suspended in 536 BC. After 16 years of inactivity and conflicting interests, the holy prophet Haggai began to preach his message again, inciting the population to resume work so that God would return to have a worthy place of worship. His preaching dates back to around 520.

Tales of the statue in Dome’s building site:

The Sant’Aggeo present on Spire G82 is the work of the sculptor Virginio Pessina, creator of the model itself, executed between 1953 and 1956. the only hint of movement of the statue is given by the right arm raised as if the prophet was caught in the act of preaching. His eyes stare straight ahead and with his left arm he holds the city, his Jerusalem to be rebuilt, the iconographic symbol that best represents him and the pivot around which his existence has been structured.
