SAINT POINTING TO HEAVEN

North walkway spire-G84

This saint raises his right index finger to the sky, as well as his gaze. It indicates a cyclical and infinite process, it is the one from whom everything descends, is born, lives and dies, returning to Him. Placed on the North walkway, it looks at the square, to indicate to whom the entire construction of the Cathedral is aimed. Between him and God there is the Virgin, a bridge between the Infinite and the finite and imperfect world of men. But the gesture of the Saint also reminds us of those who watch over us from above, who have not gone away but have only changed perspective and angle, but look at us with the same love as before. The Spire just wants to remind us that, even in difficult times, our steps are always followed by those who love us and if we don’t see their footsteps, it’s only because they have now grown wings.

Tales of the statue in Dome’s building site:

To date, unfortunately, there is little information on the historical events of the statue, its attribution and its author. We know, however, that it is the reconstruction of a nineteenth-century statue initially placed on the G109 spire and then definitively moved to the Cantiere Marmisti, where it is still preserved today, as evidenced by an inventory of the construction site.
